Home Magazine - Meet the winner of our makeover competition and see the difference

Meet Angus, the winner of the http://cairns.com.au competition, Win a Makeover from Richie. Here Richie Stevens shows us how he transformed the youngster’s bedroom We know a three year old can’t really tell us what he wanted in his room but knowing his dad’s favourite team helped, which is why Collingwood became the theme for this room. It started with the black-and-white stripes on the wall which provided a dramatic background for the rest of the room. We made a padded headboard for the bed and with the leftover fabric, made a bedrunner. It’s pretty easy to decorate a kid’s room when the colours are red, black and white. As long as your accessories are based somewhere in this colour range, it’s foolproof. Because every three year old needs somewhere to keep his toys, we added floating shelving and the red bedside cubes are actually storage (the lid lifts off). So after just one day Angus had a room that can see him grow from age three to 30 – well, as long as the love of Collingwood remains!

Richies Tips: Kids need fun and interaction in their rooms. In this case we got some “blackboard vinyl” (Status Signs) and had dots put on the wardrobe. Some felt cut in the shape of a football provided the perfect home for finger puppets. When it comes to painting something as difficult as stripes, sometimes it’s best left to the professionals. We used Hungerford Painting to give us the crispest lines. If you do want to give it a go, use painter’s tape available from hardware shops to make sure you stay between the lines!
